Building Xero... as a part-time developer

Xero

Sue King. Devoted wife and mum. Passionate .Net Developer.

She is one of our permanent part time Development Team Leads at Xero, based in our Melbourne office.

Outside of work she is a busy mum for her six-year-old son and eight-year-old daughter. Like many parents with young children, she spends plenty of time playing taxi driver for soccer, swimming and dance lessons. A young one with learning difficulties means facilitating weekly tutoring and extra-learning activities is at the top of her priority list – and working on a part-time basis is imperative.

And while Sue’s recent positions afforded her the part-time hours, they were in data migration and testing rather than her chosen field: software development. “The part-time Developer roles are as rare as hen’s teeth,” she said. “So I was particularly excited to see this role advertised with a business like Xero.”

Fast forward three interviews and Sue had secured an offer of employment. Working Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays she is already in the thick of development activities for Xero’s TaxTouch solution – a mobile-only app that enables small businesses to track business expenses and maximise business-related tax deductions.

Sue is stoked to be working with a progressive business that enables her to integrate her work and family life, and balance her career and passions. Her team dynamic? “Friendly and inclusive … and keen to embrace modern technologies to build a great product.” The Wednesday yoga sessions are an added bonus.

Pave the way for the part-time Developer

Despite all of the rhetoric on businesses evolving to foster ‘a better work-life balance’, part-time Developer positions still seem massively underrepresented in market. In November 2016, less than 0.02% of Seek’s Developer job postings in Melbourne were in the part-time category. (Part-time = 3, full-time = 1600+.)

So if you find attracting top Development talent to your business problematic then why not consider the untapped resource that is the part-time Developer.
