It is exciting times at Contact Energy as we look to grow our geothermal teams with new positions in the reservoir, operations, maintenance and engineering areas. We are New Zealand’s leading geothermal electricity generator, owning and operating six existing geothermal power stations whilst holding consents for a further 250 MW of generation on the Tauhara field. We also have some key decisions to make on the future of the Wairakei Geothermal Field where resource consents expire in 2026, so we’re are not short of awesome, market leading renewable projects!

What you’ll do

In this role you will support the geothermal team to manage historical reservoir and plant data in order to facilitate the analysis and interpretation of key reservoir trends and to optimise plant performance. Your focus will be to improve the quality and governance of our data, which could include the design of new digital workflows and appropriate solution architecture. You will also work closely with our technology team to help design and implement solutions.

How you’ll be successful

In order to be successful in this role you will need to deliver on the following key accountabilities,

  • Develop new data management and analysis tools to support the geothermal team.
  • Implementing industry best practice around data management and governance.
  • Develop an understanding of Contact’s geothermal business that allows the identification of practical opportunities to enhance the quality of our data and data processes to add value to the business.
  • Acting as a subject matter expert on the data available in the variety of structured and unstructured data sources used by the geothermal team.
  • Championing and influencing others towards industry best practice around data management and governance.
  • Develop tools and systems to assist with data interpretation by the geothermal team.
  • Develop digital workflows to replace manual, time intensive data entry and analysis processes.

The type of experience you’ll bring to the role

This position will require a broad set of skills and experience. You will have the following key attributes and behavioural competencies:

  • A relevant tertiary qualification e.g. computer science, engineering science or software engineering supported by a genuine interest in the energy industry.
  • At least 2 years’ work experience and a proven analytical, data engineering capability.
  • Sound experience with big data analysis languages including, Python, R, SAS, MS Visual Basic and SQL.
  • Good experience of databases using MS SQL Server and cloud based technology such as AWS and Azure.
  • Sound knowledge of data engineering principles and industry best practice for enterprise scale relational databases.
  • Good written communication skills in order to develop sound documentation.
  • Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders.
  • Integrity and high personal and professional standards.
  • Experience working with diverse stakeholders and a proven ability to implement process improvements
  • An understanding of the New Zealand electricity and gas markets.
