​Drilling and Projects Engineer


Context of the role

The purpose of the Drilling and Projects Engineer role is to provide technical excellence to the Geothermal Resources & Development Team and the Geothermal Operations teams with a strong emphasis on implementing Geothermal Industry World Class improvements in technology and processes. This role will report to the Geothermal Delivery Manager and have collaborative relationships across the geothermal group.

What you’ll do

  • Develop business proposals for drilling, modifying, refurbishing and abandoning geothermal production, monitoring and re-injection wells.
  • Complete well designs and programmes for drilling wells, undertaking well cleanouts and abandonments.
  • Prepare technical specifications for drilling and associated service contracts.
  • Conduct technical reviews of well drilling operations and planning.
  • Prepare cost estimates for well construction and report on drilling progress.
  • Organise, and oversee material procurement for operational activities including drilling and cleanouts.
  • Manage drilling and associated service contractors.
  • Formulate proposals to reduce maintenance costs and increase the life of production and reinjection wells.
  • Provide general engineering and project management support to the wider Geothermal Group.
  • Liaise with other groups, e.g. reservoir engineering, generation development, and steamfield operations.
  • Keep up to date with and comply with environmental, drilling and safety regulations.
  • Contribute to the strategic development of the team
  • Other duties as required and agreed upon.

How you’ll be successful

This position requires a broad set of skills and experience. Ideally, you will have the following key attributes:

  • Project management
  • Applicable degree aligned to geothermal engineering and drilling
  • A proven track record in the field of well design, drilling, application, programme development and execution
  • Experience in Geothermal well drilling design
  • Experience in drilling operation management
  • Experience in well re-entry programmes, including well workovers and cleanouts
  • Experience in the use of chemical treatments to clean wells
  • Experience in engagement of Contractors to complete a well drilling programme
  • Knowledge of reservoir engineering analysis and management
  • Experience in preparing written reports, work scope specifications, tender and contract documents.
  • Proven computer skills including skills in the use of the Microsoft suite of products.
  • Excellent creative problem solving skillset to identify and recommend cost effective solutions to challenging issues.
  • Understanding of the New Zealand electricity and gas markets would be advantageous
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management to navigate and influence at multiple layers of the business
  • Inquisitive and curiously minded
