Hydro Generation Technician (Electrical)

Context of the role

Contact Energy is on a mission – to lead NZ into a low carbon emission future. As part of this we are looking fro a Hydro Generation Technician to join our team in Clyde! This role will primarily maintain and operate the plant and apparatus to maximize reliability and flexibility of the plant. At the same time ensuring safety from the systems is front of mind. We do this to keep our people safe and away from harm.

What you’ll do

This role will see a variety of tasks across two of our plants – Clyde and Roxburgh, so we promise no day is likely to be the same. You will however focus on the following areas:

  1. To conduct maintenance throughout the plant ensuring safety at the workplace and maintaining reliability maintenance standards.
  2. Operate and isolate plant and apparatus in a safe and approved manner (as required under the Contact Energy Safety Rules), to meet safety and maintenance requirements.
  3. Operate Plant and Apparatus when required by Dispatch Traders and/or in emergencies.

How you’ll be successful

This position will require a broad set of skills and experience. We are looking for candidates who can demonstrate a mixture of the following skills and qualifications:

  • Either, Trade Certificate, or equivalent qualification, Trade or operating background with sound experience in maintenance of equipment and systems
  • Trade / Technician Certificate in Electrical engineering (with NZ electrical registration preferred).
  • Certificates of competency to operate relevant plant.
  • Ability to clearly convey information to colleagues and other business units.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including strengths in influencing, conflict management, and negotiation.
  • Integrity and high personal and professional standards.
  • Skilled at identifying and recommending cost effective solutions.
  • Skilled in the effective resolution of complex issues and problems.
  • Able to develop tools that allow problems to be solved on an ongoing and long term basis.
  • Exposure to systematic maintenance strategies and experience in condition monitoring.
  • Experience with equipment/plant operation and/or maintenance in a power generation or heavy industrial process environment.
  • Inventory management or contract supervision experience.
  • Ability to apply analytical methods to understand and solve problems.
  • Ability to apply basic cost benefits analysis principles as part of project/modification considerations.
  • In depth knowledge of some or preferably all of the following: mechanical plant, heavy rotating equipment, electrical plant, control and protection systems, boilers, gas turbine technology.
