Westpac is a strong and trusted brand in the New Zealand market.  We are proud to offer some great innovative banking products and continue to enhance our customers' experience with next generation banking.

We have recently embarked on a new phase in the way we work which has been one of the most significant changes in our organisations' history - changing the 'delivery' part of our business into cross functional teams that have adopted working methodology drawn down from 'Agile' principles. We call it the Westpac Way of Working and we want you to be part of it.

How will you help?

Over the last year, we have created a new Fast Data Platform, initially based on the Apache Hadoop and Kafka stacks. Now we have laid the foundation, we have a passionate set of people who are continuing to build and improve the platform and tooling.

We are looking for a number of Data Engineers to join us, who have experience in building CICD pipelines from scratch, and have previously designed and built solutions for data science and analytics.

It’s important you’re passionate about DevOps, Agile, Open Source Software, Data, and participating in a great team culture.

Technical experience we’re looking for:

  • At least 5+ years’ experience with SPARK, SCALA, HDFS and Cloudera.
  • Virtualisation, especially AWS and VMWare.
  • Containerisation using Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Linux OS configuration and use, including shell scripting.
  • Java programming, JVM configuration and tuning.
  • Python programming and virtual environments.
  • Git source control with standard Git workflows.
  • Network fundamentals and host-level routing.
  • Distributed system design and configuration.
  • Relational databases and SQL queries.
  • Security engineering practices and tools.
  • Streaming data at scale. Handling high velocity, high volume data events.
  • Agile and DevOps engineering practices and CICD tools.
  • Knowledgeable in these concepts:
    • Parallel and concurrent processing.
    • Distributed systems.
    • Microservices.

Experience in some of these are an advantage, equally important is a willingness to learn, and experience in similarly complex systems. Additional skills and competencies are desirable, including testing background, operations, networking and event-based architectures.

Why Westpac?

We’re a company who are progressive and committed to continuous improvement. We’re actively involved in the community and we nurture a culture that celebrates diversity.  We’ve been awarded the rainbow tick accreditation, we promote, live and breathe flexibility and we’re listed as one of the top 50 employers in the world for women.

From day one, we’ll invest in your growth and empower you to take ownership of your development.  You can also enrol in our industry-leading superannuation programme and fantastic staff banking package.

Along with the above, we can also guarantee that you’ll have a lot of fun, working with some fantastic people who are passionate about what they do and where they work.

Let’s go!
