Information Security Engineer

As an Information Security Engineer you will be a member of the Information Security Group within Westpac NZ Technology (DigiTech), working within an Agile environment to protect our customers and safeguard the bank.
The Security Engineering team is responsible for the installation, maintenance, decommission, and on-going support and troubleshooting of network security infrastructure.  The network security infrastructure includes firewalls, VPNs, proxies, URL filters, and email security gateways.
As an Information Security Engineer you’ll be confident in your ability to clearly communicate technical security related issues to senior staff members during major incident resolution meetings.
Your primary focus will be to: 

  • Implement changes to firewalls/VPN, Web Proxies, Mail / Spam filters and their corresponding management platforms
  • Participate in incident management issues where network based troubleshooting is required.
  • Keep network security infrastructure patched and compliant.
  • Perform major platform upgrades (eg firewall refresh)
  • General troubleshooting and support for project based queries regarding firewall rule requirements.
  • Ensure infrastructure device configuration is in line with written policy and standards.
  • Engage and liaise with vendors for escalated support issues and incidents.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain processes and procedures to help the team work efficiently and improve service levels.


What you’ll need to succeed: 


  • 5 years + within IT, at least 3 years’ experience within network security.
  • Firewall related certification (ideally Juniper) – JNCIA, JNCIS-SEC preferred.
  • Other general network or security certifications would be useful.
  • Experience of Juniper based Firewall technology
  • Experience operating in an enterprise environment following strict change control procedures, eg using Remedy or Service Now.  General knowledge of change, incident, and problem management (ITIL.)
  • A background in WAN/LAN, TCP/IP with solid problem solving skills.  Comfortable working with 3rd parties in order to solve B2B VPN issues.

Due to the nature of this role you will at times need to be on-call and available 24/7 during those periods.
