Network Programmer

TVNZ

What do you do?

I usually describe Programming as the people who decide what shows we'll buy and make, and when they will play - that's a pretty simplistic explanation!

What does a typical day look like for you?

My days are filled with variety. Yes, there is quite a bit of "watching TV"!! I need to view content we might want to buy, series we already own, and programmes we are having made. Of course there's lots of meetings and planning sessions too. One of the best parts of my job is I get to work with pretty much every area of the business on a regular basis, so in any one day I could be catching up with Sales, Marketing, Finance, Blacksand, Presentation, Acquisitions, Commissioning, Digital Media...

What's your TVNZ story?

I've been here since 2006 (after being lured from our main competitor!). At first I looked after programming for the Government funded channels TVNZ 6 and 7 - I got the 'channel launch bug' doing this! Then as GM Digital Channels I developed, pitched, launched and ran Heartland, Kidzone and U. Since mid-2014 I've been programming TVNZ 1 as well as our pay channels. It's been great using my 'niche' channel experience back in the world of big mainstream channels again.

Why TVNZ?

You have to admit, it's kind of the dream job being the programmer for the biggest channel in the country! Then there's the variety of all the great people and the other projects I get to work on. There's never a dull moment around here.
