Technical Design Manager - Stations and Tunnels

Job Summary

Our Civil Infrastructure Business is looking for a highly experienced director to lead the delivery of Stations and Tunnels of a large-scale Rail Project in NZ. Utilising your strong ability to lead teams, commercial acumen and stakeholder management skills, you will be responsible for delivering and coordinating design teams and ensuring project outcomes are met.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Provide experienced oversight of the development and delivery of the stations and tunnel designs so that:

  • potential issues and problems are identified early

  • effective solutions are provided to overcome issues quickly

  • the individual design teams are supported in delivering their designs

  • there is consistency and coordination across the project

  • Provide a project wide view and perspective to the design solutions

  • Promote consistency in design approach and solutions across the project

  • Facilitate the sharing of lessons learned across the project

  • Work with the Design, Engineering and Construction teams to resolve key issues

  • Challenge the design teams and identify potential optimisation's and value for money solutions

  • Support the design team in making key decisions so that progress is made to programme

  • Attend, and contribute to, Design / Construction / Engineering interface meetings

  • Member of technical challenge & review team with senior technical personnel from our Alliance partners

  • Recommend quality improvements in documentation (ie: by reviewing design package and drawings)

  • Escalate key issues or decisions that require resolution

  • Review specifications

  • Review Basis of Design Reports

  • Assist in the resolution of design review comments

  • Check standalone reports, such as; durability, space-proofing, etc

  • Management and coordination of project-wide sub-discipline and specialist technical inputs

Minimum Requirements

  • Chartered Engineer or equivalent of a recognised professional engineering body

  • Extensive expertise in stakeholder consultation and management

  • Proven track record with large client program management, pursuit execution

  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelors’ degree in Civil Engineering or similar

  • At least 20 years’ experience in the design management and delivery of complex urban rail projects
