Data Scientist


Context of the role

At Contact we believe that there is value to be found in unlocking the potential of AI and Machine Learning across Generation and Development and contributing to New Zealand’s low carbon future. As a Data Scientist you will support our Digital journey and kick-start the implementation of an internal data science capability.

The role sits within the G&D Technology team and will support digital initiatives across the wider G&D business. This will allow your data science skills to be applied across various domains, including engineering, hydrology, fuel, steam, and trading. It will integrate with additional data science centres of excellence across Contact Energy

What you’ll do

  • As a Data Scientist you will help us discover the information hidden within the vast and varied amounts of data we hold. You will interact with users across the G&D business to find areas where data science can add value, identifying requirements and framing business scenarios that are meaningful and which impact on critical business processes and/or decisions.
  • In this role you will identify the relevant data required for the models and where it is to be sourced from, liaising with external or internal vendors to obtain and structure access as required. You will identify and select features, building and optimising classifiers using machine learning techniques. You will also be required to undertake statistical analysis and apply data mining techniques, build high quality prediction and optimisation models and integrate these with our operational systems. You will qualify and monitor the quality of the model output assessing how it can be continuously improved.
  • You will align with other data scientists, architects and security personnel across the organisation, providing mentoring and advice where appropriate and contributing to organisational consistency As part of these groups you will keep up to speed with changes in tools and techniques available to the organisation and suggest new alternative mechanisms to existing processes, as techniques and tools evolve over time.

How you’ll be successful

  • Comfortable to experiment with new approaches and improve productivity through trial and error.
  • Skilled at turning technical-laden jargon into easy to understand, tangible outcomes without sacrificing detail.
  • Empathetic and personable, understanding issues from the users perspective and ensuring that suggested solutions will be a fit for the end consumer
  • Have a willingness to learn, staying up to data with improvements in techniques and technologies within you own discipline, but also how each component of G&D inter-relates and operates within the wider NZ Energy Market.
  • Have the ability to be self-directed and self-managing – owning a task, working with the appropriate business users and delivering value to them.
  • Can demonstrate a willingness to take ownership of data science within G&D, help set the direction and lead the introduction and use of modelling to create business value
  • Keep standards and guidelines consistent across the business

The type of skills and experience you’ll bring to the role

  • 5-10 years of data science experience, preferably within a scientific or engineering organisation
  • Proven experience in manipulating and analysing complex, high volume, high dimensional data from varying data sources across many domains
  • A strong passion for empirical research and for answering challenging questions with data
  • Strong experience in the application of machine leaning, optimisation and predictive modelling and a clear understanding of how to ensure successful delivery
  • Experience in obtaining data from relational data sources.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills along with the ability to convey complex quantitative analysis in a clear and concise way
  • A willingness to learn and teach
  • A combination of business focus, strong analytical and problem solving skills and programming knowledge to be able to quickly cycle hypotheses through the discovery phase

Desirable but not essential:

  • Experience in applying data science within an industrial or equivalent setting.
  • Experience in applying optimisation and predictive modelling techniques to time series data
  • Experience with R and Python and experience with visualisation tools such as Shiny
  • Experience working with Oracle and SQL Server database technologies
