Service Designer, Wavespace, Auckland and Wellington

EY Wavespace is a global network of growth and innovation centres.  Here our clients can explore and develop new ideas, in collaboration with EY service designers, technologists, business strategists, data scientists and experience designers.

The EY wavespace global network brings together multi-disciplinary talents, unique capabilities and IP, in custom designed, flexible working environments. We help our clients answer critical questions, solve their most challenging business problems and build new products and services.

EY wavespace locations feature a shared methodology and connected platform that combines EY’s experience in disruptive technologies such as artificial intelligence, RPA, blockchain, analytics and cyber security, with EY’s design thinking methodology, customer experience capability and deep industry and functional business experience.

We are interested in speaking to curious, creative, collaborative thinker-tinkerers who are not afraid of challenges, who are used to working in an agile way, and who are comfortable engaging with decision makers from the highest levels of some of New Zealand’s most interesting and complex organisations.

The Opportunity

  • Learning and applying design research methods including desk research (industries, trends, social theory), effective sample design, ethnographic interviews, and collaborative observation (e.g. transect walks) to assist the discovery phase of projects
  • Facilitating groups to think differently in ways that
    • put understanding of the customer first
    • integrate diverse perspectives to challenge assumptions about the problem
    • engage the full range of human senses (aural, visual, physical)
    • always have a pathway to action.
  • Using story crafting skills to create/direct vivid narratives about the design challenge, process, and results
  • Working in duos on design thinking projects to develop insights and concepts
  • Helping manage design thinking projects and stakeholders
  • Developing events to showcase the EY wavespace, our projects, and the mindsets frames and methods we use
  • Acting with wavespace colleagues as a champion and coach across the business to develop awareness of design thinking and how it can shape client proposals to drive innovation more successfully.

Skills and Attributes for Success:

  • Have strong evidence in their careers of combining intellectual curiosity and empathy to solve problems together with customers, citizens, or employees
  • Have 5-7 years’ experience in a specific, relevant discipline e.g. theatre, journalism, sociology, participatory development, product or service design
  • Are not purists about method, but enjoy integrating different disciplines to achieve project objectives
  • Have a keen interest in becoming an expert in design thinking or service design — and can talk about the intersections between design thinking and their own discipline
  • Are a pragmatic team player; contributing a thoughtful perspective ultimately focused on action
  • Possess an entrepreneurial spirit while working in a way that builds trust and respect.

What’s in it for you?

  • Work on interesting projects for some of NZ’s most challenging organisations in the public and private sectors to build a better working world
  • Learn from experts in design thinking and emerging technology
  • Work in a small, agile & start-up like environment, but with the scale and support of a corporate
  • Build your experience working in a respected global organization with some of the biggest brands in the country – and collaborate and work alongside a global network of like-minded people
  • Access to the latest tools, technology and solutions
  • Flexibility to handle your role in a way that’s right for you.
